Macroevolution 2 Flashcards
What is the order of eras, oldest to newest?
Cambrian Silurian Devonian Carboniferous Triassic Paleogene
What happened in the Cambrian era?
Diversification of muticellular life
- increased oxygen which allows aerobic life
- enabled by end of snowball earth
What happened in the Silurian era?
Plants developed from green algae
Leaves developed
What happened in the Devonian period?
1st amphibian developed with fish and lungs
They lived on land and were the origin of vertebrates.
Also were Jawless with a defined head and tail and aquatic
What happened in the Carboniferous period?
First animals
-insect like but much bigger
Reptiles went away from the sea and used lots of areas. They also had sealed amniotic eggs, scales, and made auric acid to conserve water.
What happened during the Triassic period?
1st type of birds (archaeopteryx)
- wings
- beak
- long tail
Derived from tetrapods, bipedal dinosaurs that had feathers
Animals also developed hearing
What happened during the paleogene period
Dinosaurs died
How do genomes duplicate and make complex organisms?(simple)
Cell Divides Death Differentiation Complex organism
What’s the punctuated equilibrium dynamic?
Evolution takes place in bursts of time (punctuations) that are “rapid” followed by periods of stasis
What three things make punctuations?
Plate tectonics and evolution
Mass extinction and it’s causes
Biological innovations
Plate tectonics and evolution (2)
Alters climate, amount of shallow seas and areas
Pulling apart over 250 million years
Mass extinction and it’s causes (3)
Extinction of mega fauna (large bodied animals)
- have slow maturation and low reproduction
Death of sessile organisms
Causes: volcanic activity, large climate shifts or meteorites
Biological innovations (4)
Flowering plants and insects together
Evolutionary novelty
- alteration in balance of forms
- animals change
Amphibia dominant until reptiles
Flying insects turned into birds
How did limbs develop?
Through modification of transcription regulation.
Our arms are forelimbs and so are wings so we came from common ancestor
