Macroevolution 1 Flashcards

1
Q

Why do we use DNA?

A

Allows you to calibrate things in time (see how nucleotide fractions have changed)

Used for extant taxi (still living). The DNA defines species with recent common ancestor. DNA has thousands of characteristics therefore can overcome convergent.

Q

Describe how fossils are formed by petrification (4)

A
  1. Death in water
  2. Sediment on top
  3. Pressure forms
  4. Eventually sees bone structures or carbon structures (eg leaves)

Q

What happens with the radioisotope C12/C14?

A

Decays over time from C14 to C12

If C14 decays by half etc you can measure the age

Q

Why can’t we detect mammals in tar?

A

Because that has to be in water

Q

What does the amount of preservation show?

A

If it was dry and cold (would make it well preserved)

16
Q

Define convergent evolution

A

Same animal evolved independently

17
Q

Define analogous

A

Able to perform similar function but different origin

18
Q

Define homologous

A

Similar origin but not the same function.

19
Q

Is convergent evolution analogous or homologous?

A

Analogous
