Q

struggles with conscience

A

worries about the consequences of his actions which makes his actions more shocking

reluctant to kill duncan at first - “we will proceed no further in this business” as he recognises that duncan trusts him as “his kingsman” and as duncans host he has a duty to protect him

macbeth kills anyone who threatens him after duncan shows paranoia and guilt

guilty conscience makes him imagine things:

  • hears a voice say “macbeth does murder sleep” after killing duncan
  • after murdering banquo he sees his ghost

Q

easily influenced

A

lady macbeth greatly infuences him as he wouldnt have murdered duncan if it hadnt been for her

her influence declines after duncans as the other murders are done alone by macbeth more easily

supernatural influence;

  • he trusts the witches straight away unlike banquo who is suspicious and thinks they want to “win us to our harm”
  • sees a dagger that leads him to duncans room
  • as the witches prophecies come true macbeth believes them even more and begins to rely on what they say heavily
