christmas carol: marley Flashcards
marleys ghost comes to warn scrooge
they both have smilar personalities - ‘kindered spirits’ who are money obsessed and dot care about others .
their similarities are emphasised by the fact scrooge answers to marleys name
the similarities emphasise marley as a warning figure
marleys punishment is the consequence of a “misused” life - dickens has already shown scrooge as selfish so marleys fate illustrates what will happen to scrooge if he doesnt change
marleys appearance is disturbing
‘death cold eyes’ ,
‘lower jaw dropped down upon its breast’ when the bandage was removed which is a horrible image
the horrible imagery reflects the nature of his message to make i seem more shocking and important
he gives off an ‘infernal’ atmosphere and his clothes are described as ‘hot vapour from an oven’ - this description links marley to hell and eternal suffering -“i cannot rest”
the chain marley is wearing is made of money related objects to carry a reminder of why he is being punihed - marley tells scrooge his chain will be larger
marley tries to help scrooge
marley regrets that he didnt change his ways but it is too late for him so all he can do is offer scrooge the chance to escape the same fate- marley implies most are already doomed so scrooge is lucky
he has stood at scrooges shoulder for ‘many a day’ in the past. acting as a hellish gurdian angel to scrooge
marley says his presence now is’ a chance and hope’.
marley is acting selflessly as he is helping others knowing there is no redemption for him
