christmas carol: fred Flashcards
fred is a complete contrast to scrooge
he arrives in scrooges office “all in a glow” and “his eyes sparkled” which emohasises his warmth and friendliness. unlike scrooge who is associated with the cold
fred disagrees with scrooges opinions and thinks scrooges wealth is useless as he doesnt “do any good with it” suggesting that unlike scrooge fred values hapiness over money
fred is empathetic and is “heartily sorry” for the cratchits after tim dies even though he barely knows them . conmtrast to scrooge who is self centred.
dickens uses fred as a contrast to scrooge to emphasise scrooges negative qualities
fred is presented positively and as cheerful
the narrator states hed like to meet “ a man more blest in a laugh” than fred - his laugh illistrates a cheerful character and optimistic
