MacArthur Flashcards
Long term
MacArthur and Truman disagreed over weapons, the importance of Asia and the risks of provoking China (In December 1950 he argues against a “limited war” to a journalist)
Military failures
After success at Inchon, MacArthur misjudged Chinese involvement - decision to cross the 38th parallel September 30th into North Korea. He tells Truman the Chinese won’t respond but China attacks at the yala river leading to a stalemate at Choisin.
Insubordination
In the spring of 1951 MacArthur made a public criticism which was forbidden by Truman (said China is close to collapse) . He also wrote a letter to Congressman Martin, which he allowed to be read out which was critical (rejected Truman’s containment policy) and it was read out in the chamber.
