In 1945 Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnamese independence. They did not get support from the US.

The Vietminh
A
In 1946 the First Vietnam War began between France and Ho Chi Minh. The French reoccupied Vietnam. The Viet Minh fought against them by 1953 the US was paying 80% of the cost of the war.

Dien Bien Phu
A
In 1954 the Vietminh defeated the French at Dien Bien Phu after they disassembled guns and dragged them over the mountian. This led to the French withdrawal.
