M8 industry Flashcards
What are the factors that must be considered when deciding where to locate your chemical manufacturing business (7)
- Availability of raw materials and water
- Availability of energy
- Market for products
- Environmental issues and waste disposal
- Transport
- Personnel
- Indigenous land rights
Why must the Availability of raw materials and water be considered (2)
- The Raw materials must be readily available, either locally of by transport links
- The raw materials should be available at a low cost
what is an example of the Availability of raw materials and water being considered
The Haber Process:
- Needs to be near a source of natural gas (source Hydrogen)
Why must the Availability of energy be considered (2)
- Energy is required as electricity and heat for the plant
- Rail transport of coal and coke(fuel) should be established
what is an example of the Availability of energy
Tomago Aluminum smelter:
- located near power station as it needs a lot of energy + needs power at a negotiable price
Why must the Market for products be considered (1)
- The products required to manufacture the chemical should be readily marketable locally, domestically, or internationally
WHy is having a market important to the business
as it ensures profitability for the business
Why must the Environmental issues and waste disposal be considered (1)
- Waste disposal strategies must be established to prevent environmental pollution
what is an example of Environmental issues and waste disposal
Solvay Process
- produces calcium chloride as a slurry which needs to be diluted and so is disposed of in the ocean
Why must Transport be considered (1)
- Raw materials need to be transported to the factory and products readily transported to markets
what is an example of Transport
Haber Process
- Near part of Newcastle where ammonia can be transported as a liquid by ship and nearby rail.
Why must Personnel be considered (2)
- Chemical factories should be located near towns or cities to obtain the necessary skilled workforce including technicians and industrial chemist
- These towns need to have high degree of livability (access to good basic services for their workers and their families)
Why is it a good idea for these businesses to be located large cities (personnel) (2)
- they are generally good sources for workers with appropriate skills and intellectual capital
- ensures workers don’t have to choose between livability and work (move to where the workers want to live)
