M5 - Topic 3 : Calculating the Equilibrium constant (Keq) Flashcards
What is the equilibrium constant
Keq
a measure of the extent to which a given reaction has or will take place
what is the equation for the equilibrium constant (Keq)
[Products] /[Reactants]
what does a low Keq value indicate
a high concentration of reactants and relatively low concentration of products at equilibrium
what does a high Keg value indicate
a high concentration of products and relatively low concentration of reactants at equilibrium
what does a Keq value that = 1 indicate
half or the reactants have turned into products
What is the equilibrium constant (Keq) equation for the general equation aA + bB ⇌ cC + dD
Keq = [C]ᶜ [D]ᵈ / [A]ᵃ [B]ᵇ
what is the reaction quotient (Q)
determines whether a system is to the right or left of the equilibrium position
what does it mean when Q is lower than Keq
reactants are in excess
The system will move to favour the product side
what does it mean when Q is higher than Keq
Products are in excess
The system will move to favour the reactant side
what does it mean when Q = K
the system is at equilibrium
what do RICE tables stand for
