M4s2 Lower Limb Muscles Overview Flashcards

1
Q

Muscles that move the thigh

A
  • refer to goodnotes for image
-muscles that flex and extend the thigh are divided anterior and posterior groups

Anterior:
The ilioposas muscle flexes the thigh

Posterior
The muscles of gluteal region extend the thigh. There are three gluteal muscles
1. Gluteus Maximus
2. Gluteus medius
3. Gluteus minimus

Q

Muscles that move the leg

A
  • refer to goodnotes
-divided into anterior, medial and posterior compartments of the thigh

Anterior
-sartorius and quadriceps muscles make up the anterior compartment of thigh
-sartorius crosses the hip and knee, acting to flex both these joints
-quadriceps muscle solely act on knee, as they originate below the hip joint
-act together to extend knee
-sartorius longest muscle in human body and also known as “crossing the leg” muscle. Quadriceps femoris are the “kicking muscles)
Note: quadriceps femoris muscles come together to form quadriceps tendon to insert on the patella (kneecap). Patella connected to the tibia (tibial tuberosity) via the patellar ligament

Medial
-adductors are group of muscle in medial compartment of thigh that function to move thigh medially with a minor involvement in the movement of the leg by a single muscle component.
-ever “pulled your groin” it is most likely that it is your adductor muscle that are sore

Posterior
-hamstrings muscles make up the posterior compartment of the thigh
-together these muscles act to end tend hip and flex the knee
-u can feel the tendons of these muscles right beside the back of your knee

Q

Muscles that move the foot and ankle

A
  • refer to goodnotes
-divided into anterior, lateral, and posterior compartments of the leg

Anterior:
The tibialis anterior muscle extends the foot (dorsiflexion)

Lateral:
The peroneus (fibularis) longus muscles evert the foot

Posterior:
-the soleus muscle is originally named after its resemblance to the flat sandal-shaped sole fish
-those that flex the foot (plantar flexion)
-there 2 larger muscles are: Gastrocnemius and soleus (immediately deep to gastrocnemius)
Note: gastrocnemius and soleus insert together to form the Achilles tendon
