Q

Tongue

A

-muscle associated with speech, taste, and the mechanical manipulation of food
-made up of muscles that control shape of tongue itself (intrinsic muscles) and muscles that move tongue during chewing and speech (extrinsic muscles)
-on the inferior surface of tongue = frenulum which anchors tongue to floor of mouth
(Newborns can’t breastfeed = tongue tie as frenulum too short so restrict tongue movement)

Papillae on tongue
-superior and lateral surfaces of tongue covered in this
-projections or bumps on tongue
-4 types: some containing taste buds allowing human sense of gustation
(When licked by cat, sandpaper feel caused by papillae)

-consist of 2 incisors, 1 canine (cuspid) and 2 molars in each quadrant of the jaw (ie. upper right quadrant)
-total 20 teeth in whole mouth

Permanent
-consists of 2 incisors, 1 canine (cuspid), 2 premolars (bicuspid) and 3 molars in each quadrant of the jaw
-total 32 teeth in whole mouth
