Lymphoid Neoplasms Flashcards
These are neoplasms composed of lymphoid cell populations that are malignant by nature, as they have invaded past basement membranes into lymphoid tissue. Specifically, this lymphoid tissue is MALT (mucosal associated lymphoid tissue) which drives the oral connection.
lymphoid neoplasms
3 lymphoid neoplasms
lymphoma, myeloma, lymphoid leukemia
type of cancer affecting the lymphatic system, causing lymphocytes to grow out of control
Hodgkin’s lymphoma
large, malignant B cells that are the hallmark tumor cells of Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Reed-Sternberg cells
T or F: Hodgkin’s lymphoma is common in the oral cavity.
F
tx of Hodgkin’s lymphoma
chemotherapy/radiotherapy
cancer of early blood-forming cells, including granulocytes, lymphocytes, megakaryocytes, and NK cells
leukemia
how leukemia is classified
Cell lineage (myeloid or lymphoid)
Acute or chronic
Rank different forms of leukemia by what age they are most likely to impact (from youngest to oldest):
acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) –> chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) –> acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) –> chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
clinical signs of leukemia
bleeding (platelets), fatigue (RBCs), and infection (WBCs)
cancer affecting plasma cells
multiple myeloma (aka plasma cell myeloma)
can be observed radiographically via punched out radiolucencies, usually in the skull
multiple myeloma
characteristic sign is amyloidosis, the accumulation of amyloid proteins, that develop from antibody light chains
multiple myeloma
tx and prognosis of multiple myeloma
chemotherapy with poor prognosis
cancer affecting the lymphatic system but Reed-Sternberg cells are NOT present
non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL)
