Lymphatic System Flashcards
Body Fluids
Plasma in blood vessels
Interstitial fluid between cells
Lymphatic system functions
Return leaked plasma (interstitial fluid) to blood stream
Scrren lymph
House lymphocytes
Transport Dietary lipids
Flow of lymph
Lymphatic Capillaries
Lymphatic vessels
Lymph Nodes
Lymphatic Trunks
Lymphatic Ducts
Venous Circulation
One way system to heart
Mimics Veins
Lymph Capillaries
Closed-ended tubes
Overlapping endothelial cells from one way flaps
Occur everywhere capillaries do (Not in BM, CNS, Avascular tissue)
Lacteals
Specialized lymph capillaries in small intestine
Pick up interstitial flid, dietary lipids, and lipid soluble vitamins
GI lymph is called chyle
Lymphatic Vessels
Receive lymph from capillaries
Valves prevent backflow in low pressure system
Resemble veins with 3 tunics (intima, media, externa)
2 types:
Afferent toward node
Efferent away
More afferent than efferent forcing lympg to slow down
Allowing processing of lymph
Lymphatic Nodes 7
Cervical Nodes along internal jugular
Axillary node
Deep nodes (aorta and celiac trunk and mesenteric arteries)
Pericranial ring (base of head)
Tracheal Nodes
Inguinal Nodes
Femoral Nodes( along femoral vein)
Lymphatic Ducts
- Return lymph to cardiovascular system
- Both Empty at the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins
- Right lymphatic Duct- upper right chest, right of head and right arm
- Thoracic duct- contains cisternal chyli
Lymphatic Nodule Structure
Oval clusters of lymphatic tissue NOT covered with a capsule
Contain macrophages, DC, lymphocytes
Lymphatic Nodules Locations
- Tonsils: Pharyngeal (adenoids) palatine and lingual
- Mucosa Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT): gastrointestinal, respiratory, genital, urinary
Lymphatic Organ Structure
Surrounded by CT capsule
Contail macrophages, DC, lymphocytes
Lymphatic Organs
Lymph Nodes
Thymus
Spleen
Thymus
Shrinks after puberty filling with fat and CT
Cortex: Immature T cells
Medulla: Mature T cells
Spleen
Which quadrant
White vs red
- Largest lymphatic organ
- Located in upper left quadrant
- White pulp:
- Lymphocytes and macrophages
- Monitors blood for antigens, initiates response
- Red pulp
- Blood reservoir, stores platelets and iron
- Hemolysis (eats old RBC and platelets)
- Remove debris in blood
Spleen receive blood from
Located
Contacts
- Receives blood from celiac trunk
- Located btw 9th and 11th ribs
- Contacts
- stomach
- Large intestine
- Left kidney
- Tail of pancreas
- Intraperitoneal
- Suspended by messentery
- Gastrolineal ligament, attaches hilus of spleen to stomach
- Lienorenal ligament, attaches hilus to left kidney, passage of splenic vessels
