Lymphatic system Flashcards
1
Q
lymph nodes
A
- small, glandular structures concentrated in the neck, axilla and groin
- produce and store lymphocytes
- home to macrophages that filter lymph
2
Q
lymph nodules
A
- masses of lymphoid tissue comprised of macrophages and lymphocytes
- lymph nodules are not encapsulated like lymph nodes
3
Q
thymus
A
- located posterior to the sternum
- thymus is large in children
- shrinks after adolescence
- responsible for production and maturation of T-cells
4
Q
spleen
A
- largest lymphoid organ
- located in the ULQ
- home to macrophages that filter blood
5
Q
interstitial fluid
A
- tissue fluid found between cells
- once collected and filtered, called lymph
6
Q
antibody
A
protein the body creates in response to specific antigens
7
Q
immunoglobulin
A
antibodies
8
Q
B-Cells
A
type of lymphocyte that recognizes antigens and responds by turning into plasma cells. Then creates antibodies against specific antigens with plasma cells
9
Q
T-Cells
A
type of lymphocyte that can recognize antigens and attaches them to attack the invading cells directly
10
Q
Monocytes
A
engulf and destroy pathogens that have been coagulated with antibodies
