found in wrists/ankles, small and round
ex) carpals, tarsals
flat bones
majority of area is flat/slightly curved
ex) skull, ribs
irregular bones
unusual shape related to their function
ex) vertebrae, pelvis
sesamoid bones
small, round bones held together by tendons in joints
ex) patella
