Lymphatic System Flashcards
Specific Immunity
Specialized cells (T&B cells) recognize specific foreign molecules called antigens.
Nonspecific Immunity
Physical Barriers (skin/mucous membranes), Fever, Inflammation, Specific action by immune cells, enzyme activity to protect against harmful agents.
Lymphocytes
White Blood Cell
Primary Lymphoid Organs
Red Bone Marrow & Thymus
Secondary Lymphoid Organs
LAST
Lymph nodes
Adenoids
Spleen
Tonsils
Adenoids
Contain lymphocytes for destruction of invading pathogens
Tonsils
Monitor external environment that the mouth/nose are exposed to and react with immune response when appropriate.
Thymus
Lobular structure containing many immature/ inactive lymphocytes.
As lymphocytes mature, they leave the thymus to attack infected cells in lymphatic tissues throughout the body.
Spleen
Largest lymph organ
Houses lymphocytes for potential immune response.
Phagocytes within spleen perform basic function of removing cell debris from the blood.
Lymph nodes
House lymphocytes and macrophages with destroy foreign material contained in the lymph fluid
Lymphatic Vessels
Transport Lymph fluid throughout the lymphatic system.
Stem Cells
Differentiate into RBCs, Platelets and immune cells (lymphocytes, neutrophils, macrophages, and white blood cells)
