Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Function of the cardiovascular system
Transport blood from one part of the body to another. This includes nutrients, oxygen, ions, proteins, hormones/ other signaling molecules, as well as waste products including carbon dioxide.
Organs of the cardiovascular system
Heart & blood vessels
Components of Blood
Plasma & formed elements
Plasma (components)
GEWP & metabolic waste
Glucose
Electrolytes
Water
Proteins (enzymes, hormones, blood clotting factors)
… and metabolic wastes.
Formed Elements (3)
Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets
Red Blood Cells (purpose)
Transport oxygen and CO2
White Blood Cells
Fight infection by attacking foreign cells and clearing old/diseased cells
Platelets
Important for homeostasis (ability to stop bleeding after vascular injury)
Heart Anatomy
4 Chambers: L & R Atria, L & R Ventricles
Systemic Circuit
Transports blood & components to the body
Pulmonary Circuit
Transports blood & components between the heart and the lungs
Arteries
Carry oxygenated blood from heart to provide oxygen/nutrients dissolved in blood to the body.
Veins
Return deoxygenated blood back to the heart where it is passed onto the pulmonary circuit.
