LYMPHATIC SYSTEM Flashcards

1
Q

What is the lymphatic system?

A

The Lymph System is:

  • A network of tubes thorughout body
  • Drains lymph fluid from tissues & empties it back into the blood stream
  • To Heart - to Liver/ Empties through Stool AND
  • To Heart - to Kineys/Empties through Urine.

SM TXT BK

The lymphatic system is a network of tubes throughout the body that drains fluid
(called lymph) from tissues and empties it back into the bloodstream. The main roles
of the lymphatic system include managing the fluid levels in the body, filtering out
bacteria, and housing types of white blood cells. Lymph is filtered through the spleen,
thymus and lymph nodes before being emptied into the blood.

Q

Where is the only place that the Lymphatic Vessels do NOT criss-cross in the body?

A

The central nervous system. The lymph vessels don’t criss-cross the central nervous system.

SM TXT BK

  • Lymphatic vessels; Lymphatic vessels criss-cross the entire body, except for the central nervous system.
  • Some lymphatic vessels have valves (similar to the valves in veins), which stop the lymph from running back the wrong way.

Q

Where is the Spleen located?

A
  • Inside the abdomen, just under the diaphram.

SM TXT BK:

Spleen; The spleen is inside the abdomen, just under the diaphragm. This is one of the filtering organs of the blood. As well as removing microbes, the spleen also destroys old or damaged red blood cells.

Q

Where are Lymph Nodes found?

A
  • All though the body
  • Throat
  • Armpits
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Groin
THEY ARE ALL CLOSE TO ARTERIES

SM TXT BK:

  • Lymph nodes; Lymph nodes are found at various points around the body, includingthe throat, armpits, chest, abdomen and groin.
  • All lie close to arteries.
  • Bacteria picked up from the tissues by the lymph are trapped in the lymph node. White blood cells called lymphocytes can then attack and kill the bacteria.
  • This is why your lymph nodes tend to swell if you have an infection. Viruses and cancer cells are also trapped by lymph nodes.

A

GOOGLE: (a toxin or other foreign substance which induces an immune response in the body)

17
Q

What are Tonsils?

A

SM TXT BK:

  • Lyphoid tissue that protect from bacteria (nasal and oral cavity)

Tonsils - lymphoid tissue that protects against bacteria attempting to enter through the nasal and oral cavities.

18
Q

Where are tonsils?

A

Tonsils are fleshy pads located at each side of the back of the throat.7 Nov 2020

GOOGLE What are the 4 organs of the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system consists of all lymphatic vessels and lymphoid organs. For example, the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus as well as the lymphatic tissue found in the small intestine (Peyer’s patches) and throat (adenoid tonsils, palatine and tubal tonsils), to name a few, all represent lymphatic organs.30 Nov 2016

Q

How does Breast Cancer treatment effect the Lymphatic System and what can patients do to reduce effects?

A

BREAST CANCER SUMMARY

  • When they cut out breast cancer they cut out those lymph nodes underneath the arms to stop it spreading to other areas.
  • Results in extreme swelling in the fingers, hands, arms; which means pain in their arms and around their armpit - because no lymph nodes in area to drain the toxins.
  • NEED to MOVE ARMS to manually get that fluid moving through: Gently walking, moving in some way, elevating their arms above their head. Even a little bit dry brushing.
  • So they can help that lymph drain out and it doesn’t pool down into their arms and hands.
22
Q
A
  • Lymph nodes and lymphatic organs filter the lymph fluit and eliminate harbful substance.
  • Lymph Organs:
  • Lymph nodes
  • Spleen
  • Thymus
  • Lymphatic tissue in the small intestine (Peyer’s patches)
  • Tonsils in throat (adenoid tonsils, palatine and tubal tonsils)

The lymph drains into lymphatic capillaries. The lymphatic capillaries conduct the fluid into larger lymphatic vessels, which carry it toward lymph nodes and lymphoid organs. The nodes and organs filter the lymph and eliminate harmful substances.

23
Q
A
  • Our bodies have 3 times more lymph fluid than blood
  • No organ to pump it.
  • The pumping action of deep breathing will help the lymphatic system transport the toxins into the blood before they are detoxified by the liver.
  • Inversions and exercise help too
  • Rebounding is the most effective way to pump lymph
  • Hot water helps dilate the blood vessels, Cold water shrivels blood vessels. CREATES “PUMP” action that forces out the toxic fluids that have remained in the body.
24
Q

What is Bone Marrow?

A

Bone marrow is a sponge-like tissue found inside the bones.

Bone marrow: This is the soft, spongy tissue in the center of certain bones, such as the hip bone and breastbone. White blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets are made in the bone marrow.

25
Q

Where else is there lymph tissue - not listed by SM

A

NOT FROM SM

THERE IS ALSO LYMPH TISSUE

Peyer’s patches: These are small masses of lymphatic tissue in the mucous membrane that lines your small intestine. These lymphoid cells monitor and destroy bacteria in the intestines.

Appendix: Your appendix contains lymphoid tissue that can destroy bacteria before it breaches the intestine wall during absorption. Scientists also believe the appendix plays a role in housing “good bacteria” and repopulating our gut with good bacteria after an infection has cleared.

26
Q

Lymphatic System Functions 1?

A
  • Maintain our Fluid Balance:
  • Whole body is mainly made up of fluid
  • Cells have fluid
  • Lymph makes sure we don’t have excess fluids in the cells and drains into lymphatics and then to heart to drain
  • IF haven’t been moving enough – there can be fluid pooling. Like if you’re on a 10 hour flight you may have swollen ankles because fluid has pooled there. Excess fluid gets stuck in the tissues and you end up with thick swelling.
  • Lymph relies on movements to drain. There is no pump. Relies on your muscles and movement. (32.11)
  • Lymphatic system DRAINS the TOXINS from the body cells via bloodstream/hart then the liver (stool dump) and kidneys (urine dump).
  • Yoga is one way of squeezing/massaging/oxygenating the tissues to drain this fluid.

Very easily rectified, to help you drain that flight fluid, you can:

  • Walking
  • peddling your feet
  • put your legs up the wall
27
Q

Lymphatic System Functions 2

A

Lymphatic System Functions

  • Immune Function:
  • Immune function via lymph vessels throughout body & lymph (larger node groups include: armpits, groin, neck)
  • Lymphocytes (fight bacteria) – immune cells in lymph nodes - B-cells and T-cells found in lymph, blood, bone, bone marrow, thymus, spleen, and tonsils, which produce antibodies, attacking and destroying antigens.
  • Tonsils - lymphoid tissue that protects against bacteria attempting to enter through the nasal and oral cavities. 1st port of call for any invasion. Each time you have tonsillitis you get more and more scaring on the tonsils and that can become a problem if it starts to close off the windpipe and you can’t breath – so they generally remove them if you have a lot of tonsillitis.
  • LYMPHNODES expand when you have an infection because they are swollen with lymphocytes to fight the infection
  • Like if you have a cut on your leg, the lymph nodes in your groin may swell ready to protect you so that the infection doesn’t spread from your leg to anywhere else.
28
Q

Other wasy to help the lymph system stay healthy?

A

Other things you can do to keep your lymphatic system healthy:

  • Dry Body Brushing, brushing from the extremities back upwards towards the heart.
  • Yoga is a fantastic way of keeping your lymphatic system healthy. Moving your body rhythmically. In a nice flow gently. Your contracting and stretching muscles moving the body sometimes are upside down bending forward twisting around is all amazing ways to gently squeeze on the lymphatic system and help to drain the fluid out of the cells into the lymph fluid into the heart and to drain out via liver kidneys and urine or stool.
29
Q

Why is Yoga a great aid for Lymphatic System?

A
  • Moves body rhythmically.
  • Gentle nice flow.
  • Contracting and stretching muscles, PUMPING/ LYMPH
  • Moving body
  • Sometimes Upside down
  • Bending forward
  • Twisting around
  • All amazing ways to gently squeeze on the lymphatic system and help to drain the fluid out of the cells into the lymph fluid into the heart and to drain out via liver kidneys and urine or stool.
