Lungs, Pleura, & Thoracic Wall: Ribs Flashcards
Atypical ribs include
1st, 2nd, 11 and 12 ribs
1st rib: distinguishing characteristics
Scalene Tubercle and ridge, Subclavian vein, subclavian artery
single facet on head for articulation with TI vertebra + 2 transversely directed grooves
short, flattened, most sharply curved, and widest part is nearly horizontal
2nd rib : distinguishing characteristics
Tuberosity for serratus anterior
2 facets on head for articulation with the bodies of the TI and T2 vertebrae
10th-12th ribs: distinguishing characteristics
like 1st rib, only possess one facet on their heads for articulation with single vertebra
11th-12th ribs: distinguishing characteristics
short, have no neck or tubercle
Typical features of the vertebral end of a rib
- head
- neck
- tubercle
- angle
Middle of rib =
the shaft
Sternal end of the rib does what
articulates directly with sternum, costal cartilage, or sits in fascia
The “true ribs”
1-7 vertebrocostal
the “false ribs”
9-10 vertebrochondral
ribs 11 & 12
“floating” ribs
What makes 1-7 “true” ?
they articulate directly with sternum
what makes 8-10 “false” ?
their cartilage connects to the cartilage of the ribs above them, so they dont articulate with sternum directly
what makes 11-12 “floating?”
they do not have any anterior articulations
end in posterior abdominal musculature
rib heads
typically have two facets
- facet articulates with numerically corresponding vertebra
- second facet articulates with vertebra superior to it
