Lumbar Spinal Nerves and Related Structures Flashcards
Lumbar spinal nerves
Right below T12
L1-L5
Inferior to Thoracic region
L1-L4 make up lumbar plexus
L5 sacral plexus: “lumbosacral trunk” connects it with the lumbar plexus
Lumbar nerves
Iliohypogastric nerve: intestinal region
Ilioinguinal never: where torso meets thigh
Genitofemoral nerve: genital/thigh region
Lateral femoral cutaneous: lateral region of thigh, skin related
Femoral nerve (major nerve of thigh, made from L,3,4)
a) anterior compartment,
b) upper part of lower limb
Obturator nerve
Where torso meets thich
Lumbosacral Trunk (L5)
Iliohypogastric Nerve
below the ileum
Illioinguinal Nerve
where torso meets thigh
Genitofemoral nerve
medial on the thigh, genital/femeral region
Femoral nerve
anterior compartment of thigh
Obturator Nerve
medial compartment of thigh
Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve
lateral to femoral region; lateral on the thigh, cutaneous
Sacral Plexus
L4-S4
Incorporates some nerve fibers from the lumbar plexus, so they are intwined
Sacral Plexus nerves
Superior Gluteal nerve Inferior gluteal nerve Nerve to piriformis Sciatic nerve (Common fibular division + tibial division) Posterior femoral cutaneous nerve Pudendal nerve
Lumbosacral Trunk
L5- lumbosacral trunk
Picks up innervation from S1-S3
Sciatic Nerve
L4 + Thoracolumbar trunk (L5+S1 to S3)
Largest nerve in the body
Divided into “common fibular division” and tibial division
Innervates entire posterior thigh and everything from the knee down, except for some cutaneous stuff
Common fibular division and Tibial Division
Sciatic nerves
Travel until their get to the posterior of knee (“poplineal region”) then they split into tibial (posterior compartment), fibial (lateral compartment, anterior compartment)
