Lung Function Flashcards
1
Q
What are the main metrics of lung function
A
- FVC – (Force Vital Capacity) - Volume of air in litres that can be forcibly and rapidly exhaled following maximum inspiration. Should be ≥80% of predicted. Reduced in restrictive disease
- FEV1 – (Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 Second) volume of air that is exhaled after one second in the FVC manoeuvre. Should be ≥80% of predicted. Reduced in restrictive and obstructive disease
- PEF – (Peak Flow) the maximum speed at which air is exhaled. It is measured as a speed of l/min – indicating how many litres of air would pass out of the lungs in a minute at that continued speed. Should be ≥80% of predicted
