Lowland Case Study - South Downs - Physical Flashcards
advantage of farming
the income generated from farming supports the local economy. Agricultural businesses account for 6% of employment in the park.
disadvantage of farming
the decline in arable farming and changes in farming practises have reduced the presence of arable plants which has damaged wildlife habitats
advantage of forestry
a large percentage of the woodland that makes up the South Downs national park is made up of ancient trees which provide habitats for a diverse range of wildlife
disadvantage of forestry
the removal of woodland for new developments is threatening some of the ancient large leaved lime woodland. This may be very like the wild wood that covered the South Downs after the ice age
advantage of settlements
120,000 people live in the South Downs national park, making it the most populated in the UK.
disadvantage of settlements
in recent years many of the settlements in the North + South Downs have experienced new developments which have not always reflected local character.
what is the rock type in the lowlands?
sedimentary - chalk and clay
how has past tectonic activity influenced the landscape?
the African and Eurasian plate crashed into each other sending shockwaves through Europe, this causes the rocks to slant.
how has geology influenced the shape of the landscape?
the water erodes away the clay leaving the more resistant chalk rock. This forms the escarpment with the dip slope and the scarp slope.
