where is Somalia?
Somalia is in the horn of Africa, above Kenya.
Why did Somalis first come to the UK?
Somalis came to Cardiff at the end of the 19th Century as seamen on the coal ships when the Suez channel opened.
Why did the Somalis move to Cardiff?
They moved to Cardiff because they were seamen by nature and Cardiff had good docks.

Butetown
Why is living in an area where other people share your language important to migrants?
Because muslims have strict rules so they can intergrate with each other. They also speak the same language and have the same culture.
Why did some somalis return home in the 1960s?
Post war regeneration swept away many of the Somali boarding houses so they has nowhere to live. They also had made enough money and knowledge to go back to Somalia.
Why did Somalis come back to Cardiff in 1988?
In 1988 civil war broke out in Somalia so some people fled the war to join the Somalian community in Cardiff.
How many Somalis are thought to live in Cardiff?
There aren’t accurate statistics for how many Somalis live in Cardiff. One source says there are 7000 in South Wales. In 1994 save the children estimated 2000 refugees and 2000 established residents.
Why did the Somalis choose to move back to the UK? Why not somewhere else?
In the UK many Somalians had family or clan that could provide them with both economical and cultural support. The families/clans would also send financial contributions to fund for travel expenses.
What challenges will the Welsh Government face as a result of this migration?
- cost of healthcare and education
- cost of slow government asylum seekers
- ethnicity tensions and conflicts
- segregation between groups in lower status areas of cities or towns.
