lower limb muscles Flashcards
what is the iliopsoas group (movement and function)
-includes psoas major and minor and iliacus muscle
-strong hip flexor
-flexion of thigh at hip and flexion of vertebral column when lower limb is planted
rectus femoris movement
part of our quadriceps
-flexion of thigh at hip
-extension of leg at knee
muscles that causes flexion of thigh at hip besides iliopsoas and rectus femoris
-sartorius
-adductor longus and adductor magnus (anterior)
gluteal group
-gluteus maximus: extension, lateral rotation, abduction (upper fibres only)
-gluteus medius/minimus: abduction and medial rotation
what does the glute max stabilize
the knee when the leg is extended
- it insertion is at the iliotibial tract
adductor group
adductor brevis, longus, magnus, pectineus, gracilis
*all except pectineus do medial rotation
*gracilis causes flexion of leg at knee
lateral rotator group
little muscles below glute max…
-cause lateral rotation
*all except quadratus femoris causes abduction of thigh at hip
quadriceps movement and muscles
all cause extension of leg at knee, insert at tibial tuberosity
-rectus femoris, causes flecion of thigh at hip too
-vastus lateralis and medialis
-vastus intermedist
hamstring muscles and movement
all cause flexion of leg at knee and extension of thigh at hip
-semimembranosus, medial rotation
-semitendinosus, medial rotation
-bicep femoris, lateral rotation
gracilis muscle movement
-adduction of thigh at hip
-flexion of leg at knee
-medial rotation of hip and knee
locking of knee
popliteus m. contract= medial rotation of tibia which then unlocks the joint
triceps surae (gastrocnemius and soleus)
-plantar flexors of the foot
-soleus is a synergist
-gastrocnemius causes flexion of leg at knee
-insert on the calcaneus via the Achilles tendon
what muscles cause plantar flexion
-gastrocnemius
-soleus
-plantaris
-fibularis longus/ brevis
-tibialis posterior
what muscle causes dorsiflexion
tibialis anterior
what muscles cause inversion and eversion of foot
inversion: tibialis anterior/ posterior
eversion: fibularis longus/brevis
