CV 2 Flashcards
*what are the three layers of blood vessel
1) adventitia (primarily collagen fibres)
2) media (smooth muscle)
3)intima (simple squamous epithelium)
*what is the difference between a muscular artery and a medium sized vein?
difference is the thickness of layers
*what is an elastic artery and examples pf an elastic artery
-tolerates high pressure changes during cardiac cycle
-recoil during diastole to propel blood forward
ex: aorta, brachiocephalic trunk, pulmonary trunk
-media has more elastic CT fibres
-intima is thicker but still has endothelium
*muscular artery example and what it is
-transports blood to skeletal m. nd organs
ex: radial, ulnar, brachial, femoral
media layer has more smooth muscle
-vessel diameter under control of autonomic nervouse system
*arterioles
-control blood flow between arteries and capillaries by responding to local conditions
-adventitia transitions to thinner layer of CT
-media turns into incomplete smooth muscle layers
*capillaries
-smallest and most delicate vessel
-only vessel where nutrient/gas exchange occurs between blood and tissues
-lacks adventitia and media; intima is thin… good because less stuff getting in the way for nutrients and gas exchange
2 types of capillaries
1) continuous capillaries
- endothelial cells connected by tight junctions and desmosomes
2)fenestrated capillaries
-has pores which permit very rapid exchange of fluid and solutes
*what is the role of precapillary sphincter
regulate entry and exit in region
-when open they maintain blood pressure
-smooth muscle
