Location of Research Flashcards
Laboratory Experiment meaning
Location where scientific research is conducted, with specialist equipment (can not be conducted in a field).
Confounding and extraneous variables are controlled and have standardised procedures.
Field Experiment meaning
Location outside of a lab in a natural setting, with less control over confounding variables, but still utilises standardised procedures.
Online Experiment meaning
Location where participants assessed via internet/ social network…
Used as questionnaires but also experimental.
Laboratory experiment: positives
- Can be arranged any time
- Measures behaviour precisely
- Extraneous variables controlled
- Good internal validity
Laboratory experiment: negatives
- Artificial environment= lacks ecological validity
- Behaviour not generalised to the world
- Behaviour is not natural.
Field experiment: positives
- Behaviour reflects real life in a natural setting (increase ecological validity)
- Reduce demand characteristics
- Examine behaviour in a huge range of context (better than lab).
Field experiment: negatives
- Extraneous variables interfere due to reduce control of experimenters
- Hard to find truly causal effects between IV and DV.
- Hard to replicate
Online Experiment: positives
- large group allows more diverse and reduce culture bias.
- Free with cheap software
- Data analysed quicker.
Online experiments: negatives
- Methods are limited
- Lack of consent and protection from harm
- Difficult appropriate debrief
