Informed consent meaning
Formally agree to take part in study after given comprehensive information concerning the nature of the study.
Right to withdraw meaning
Clear they can leave at any time (if being paid, still receive payment if withdraw)
Deception meaning
Not told the true aims of a study (what it will involve) so can not give valid consent.
Confidential meaning
Communication of personal info from one person to another, with trust that info will be protected.
Privacy meaning
Persons right to control the flow of the info about them.
Protection from harm meaning
Participants should not experience negative physical/ psychological harm.
Informed consent: negatives
- Given too much info can invalidate the results
- May agree but still not completely understand
Right to withdraw: negatives
- May feel they cannot leave as they don’t want to ruin the study.
Deception: negatives
- Suffer stress and anxiety
- A debrief may not undo damage.
Confidential: negatives
- Possible to work out who they are on basis of info.
Protection from harm: negatives
- Not always predict potential harm until it happens (too late)
Privacy: negatives
- No universal agreement on what public place is
- May still object to being observed in public.
