Experiment Design Flashcards
1
Q
Independent Group meaning
A
Participants take part in only one condition.
2
Q
Repeated Measures meaning
A
Participants take part in both experimental and controlled conditions.
3
Q
Matched Pairs meaning
A
Participants for experimental group partner will participants who are similar (age, sex, character, brain disfunction …) in the controlled group.
4
Q
Independent Group: positives
A
- Distributes variables evenly
- Only doing 1 experiment= avoid boredom
- Avoid order effects.
5
Q
Independent Group: negatives
A
- Large number of participants needed
- Cannot control effects (different characters= confounding variable)
6
Q
Repeated Measures: positives
A
- Fewer participants needed.
- Minimise participant variables (characteristics don’t matter).
7
Q
Repeated Measures: negatives
A
- Order effects= may do worse 2nd time because of boredom effect).
- demand characteristics (repeating conditions).
8
Q
Matched Pairs: positives
A
- Avoid order effects
- Minimise participant variables (same characteristics= match).
9
Q
Matched Pairs: negatives
A
- Difficult to achieve good match
- Need a large group to obtain match
- Not completely eliminate variables.
