LO4-4.4 Prevention Measures Flashcards
What are the three types of prevention measures that protect data?
- Physical
- Logical
- Secure destruction
Physical protection measures are…
- Biometric
- Locking doors
- CCTV cameras
Biometric definition
They use a person’s characteristics including;
- fingerprint
- eye
- voice
Logical protection measures are…
- Access rights and permissions including authentication, usernames and passwords
- Anti-virus software
- Encryption
- Secure backups of data
Access rights and permissions definition
These define what a user can do with a file or folder
What different ways can access rights and permissions be confirmed?
- Authentication
- Usernames and passwords
Authentication
Can be used to access secure areas
Usernames and passwords
These are two-part protection measures;
- The username is authorisation
- The password id authentication
Both need to be correct before access is granted
Anti-virus software
Is used to detect and remove any viruses trying to gain access
Encryption
Encryption software encrypts the data files. This means it will not be possible to read without a key
Secure Backups
These are copies of files and folders in use. The backups are made and stored away from the computer system
Secure of Data definition
Data that is no longer needed must be securely destroyed
What are the three ways of securely destroying data?
- Overwriting
- Magnetic wipe
- Physical destruction
Overwriting
When the data that is no longer needed is overwritten, usually with a binary code
Magnetic Wipe
This is when the magnetic field part of the storage device is removed. All data on the device is then unreadable
