Liver Functions Flashcards
1
Q
What happens in the filteration?
A
- The liver filters blood coming through the vessel. The portal vein drains everything from the GIT to to liver (1000ml)
- 2nd vessel hepatic artery has oxygenated blood (300ml)
- Both vessels drain ito the sinusoid which goes to the central vein, the sinusoid has lots of pores but are lined with epthelia which control what comes in or out and the kupfer cells engulf the bacteria
- When fluids go through the sinusoid they leak out and go the hepatocytes where they are used for metabolism or bile formation
- Blood goes to the central vein and the CV lobules come together making a hepatic vein that leaves the liver and merges with the interioir vena cava
2
Q
What happens in the storage?
A
Stores 450ml of blood
3
Q
What happens in the metabolism?
A
- Carbs and protein are absorbed then go to the liver for processing
- Liver regulates the adipose tissue releasing fatty acids and glycerol
- Glucose from the carbs go es through the portal vein to the liver and is stored if there is too much it is stored as fat in the adipose tissue
- In fat metabolism the liver takes fatty acids and glyverol to make triglycerides or to make ATP and ketone bodies
- Excess amount of amino acid goes to the liver to be metabolised and released as ammonia, glutamate and glutamine, the liver makes albumin, copper/ion binding proteins and coagulation proteins
4
Q
What happens in bile formation?
A
- Breaks fats down into smaller fats
- associated with Vit DEKA
- Bile is made from h20, cholestrol, ions, bile acids, phospholipids and proteins.
5
Q
What happens in the regenation?
A
- 70% loss can regenated
6
Q
What are the main facts about the liver ?
A
- the largest organ in the body
- Located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen
- Weights 1.5kg (2% of body weight)
- Lobules carry out their functions
7
Q
How does urine turn yellow?
A
- Heme is pulled apart in biliverdin–> unconjuated bilirubin which goes to the liver and becomes a conjugated bilirubin then goes into the urobeilign to the kidneys foe yellow urine or the intestine for brown feces
