Low Albumin
Loss of secretory function and kidney disease
High GOT (AST)
Shows liver damage (also RBC and muscle damage)
Transaminases (GOT/GPT)
High with normal ALP indicates liver necrosis
Could also be due to alcohol, viral or cancer
Over 1000 in paracetamol overdose
Alkaline Phosphotases
High means bile duct obstruction, liver disease and osteoblastic bone disease!
But also high in growing kids, 3rd term prenancy and Paget’s bone disease
Bilirubin
High direct (conjugated) indicates problem after liver
Prothrombin Time (INR)
Slower clotting time shows liver failure
Used to monitor warfarin and vitamin K
Gamma Glutaryl Transpeptidase
High due to chronic drug and alcohol abuse
Sensitive to minor liver function changes
High amylase
Shows acute pancreatitis
