40 specific rights determined by the UN - but not necessarily law in every country!
E.g. right to live in a family environment, contact with both parents, education

Baumrind
Authoritarian - Strict discipline, no discussion
Authoritative - Strict discipline but explained and discussed with children
Permissive - Relaxed ideas about children behaviour

Authoritarian - Demanding and unresponsive

Authoritative - shown to have better academic and more socially competent! Allows democracy but supports autonomy!

Peer relationships
Children show an early interest in peers!
12-18 months will touch mum but look a lot more at unfamiliar peers!
Sibling Peer relationships
Siblings show tolerance and hostility, understanding and rivalry!
More violent with siblings than peers
Types of Play
2-4 Years old: 1/3 Solitary, 1/3 Parallel, 1/3 groups
5-6 Years: More group play, sex segregated, larger groups. Tend to be more mixed age groups in boys
12 Years: Cliques, gangs, mix-sexed
Sociometry
Measures social relationships! Determines the network of friends and social relationships!
Popular - socially competing
Controversial - sociable and aggressive, most liked but also high least liked
Neglected - well-adjusted but shy
Rejected - low most liked and high least liked show withdrawal and high risk of aggression!
