I&P Perception Flashcards
Perception
More than just sensory discrimination and receiving information
Involves organisation and interpretation of the information
Bottom-up processing
Sensory driven
Organise incoming information
Top-down processing
Driven by knowledge, experience and expectations
Structures information as it comes through
Depending on situation and context we can interpret the same thing differently
Visual perception - adaptation effect
Produces negative after images
Visual perception - depth perception
Binocular disparity gives us a 3D image allowing us to develop sense of depth
Visual perception - gestalt or whole perception
Allows us t see information as a whole and organise tendencies of the CNS. Aims to seek meaningful groups of information!
Sensory limitation
Awareness failure or protective filtering!
Huxley thinks the function is to shut out large amounts of irrelevant information to leave only a small selection of useful information
Huxley
Believes sensory limitation to shut out irrelevant information to allow a small amount of information we can cope with!!
Assumptive world
An internalised cognitive model that assumes we are blind from birth but develop vision as an adult
Recovering from blindness
Okay with past touch experiences
But difficulty with 3D challenges
Context of Madness
Rosenhaan - 8 pseudo patients pretend to hear voice and presented themselves to a psychiatrist!
Shows we look at people as insane just because they were in an insane place!
