Liver as a storage organ Flashcards
What is Ferritin?
Large spherical protein containing iron, which concentration directly proportional to total iron stores of body
What are the 2 classes of vitamins and which is needed more highly? (2)
1) Water and Fat Soluble
2) Water as pass more readily through the body
What are the fat soluble vitamins and the water soluble vitamins?
1) Fat: A,D,E,K
2) Water: B and C
What is vitamin A used for? (4)
What are 3 sources of it?
1) Cellular growth, CM stabilisation, eyesight and reproduction
2) Oily fish, dairy and liver
What consequences of vitamin A deficiency and toxicity?
1) Deficiency: Night blindness, growth retardation and increased infection susceptibility
2) Toxicity: Anorexia, vomiting, headache, reduced bone density, conjunctivitis
What are the functions and 4 sources of vitamin C?
1) Synthesis of collagen NT and carnitine. (Antioxidant ability, and absorb non-haem iron)
What are the consequences of vitamin C deficiency and toxicity?
1) D: Weakness, shortness of breath, aching, bleeding, gums, skin thickening
2) T: Diarrhoea, nausea, renal stone formation
How many types of Vitamin B and what is role?
1) 8 types
2) Cell metabolism and energy production
Functions of Vitamin D
Increased intestinal calcium absorption
Resorption and formation of bone
Reduced renal excretion of calcium
(Causes bone problems)
Role of Vitamin E?
Antioxidant
Role of Vitamin K
Activation of some blood clotting factors
What is folate used for?
Use as a coenzyme in methylation reactions, DNA synthesis
Where are clotting factors produced and what is their role?
Produced in the liver
Produce a fibrin clot to prevent fibrin clot
