Exocrine Pancreas Flashcards
What are the 2 features of Exocrine secretion?
1) Aqueous Bicarbonate secretion
2) Enzyme Secreteion
What is the pathway through the pancreatic duct?
Enzymes and fluid flow down into duodenum through ampulla of Vater
What does pancreatic amylase do and break?
Do: Digests starch in SI
Break: Alpha 1-4 linkages
What are the role and examples of proteases?
Digest proteins to AA
Trypsin/Chymotrypsin
What is role of pancreatic lipase?
Triglyceride digestion by hydrolysis
Dietary fat absorption dependent on pancreatic and hepatic secretion
What does amylase hydrolyse?
Starch to maltose and dextrins
What are consequences of Exocrine dysfunction?
Malnutrition, Osteoporosis, Increased Cardiovascular morbidity, significant symptom burden
How is Exocrine dysfunction treated?
1) Enzyme replacement
2) Assessment of Bone Health
3) Smoking Cessation
4) Treat underlying cause
