What is recovery?
Process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.
What do people with a mental health diagnosis desire?
Happy life, meaningful activities, good friendships and relationship and being able to achieve their dreams.
What is the focus of recovery?
- Moving away from ‘do this and you will get better’ to a partnership with the consumer
- Health service and clinicians work together with the consumers on their goals and helping them achieve what they want from their life.
Describe lived experience of recovery
People who have “walked the walk” share their experiences with others who are at the beginning of their recovery journey.

What are the principles of recovery?
1) Uniqueness of the individual: meaningful, purposeful life, personal outcomes
2) Real choices: build on strengths, duty or care vs taking positive risks
3) Attitudes/rights: Listening, support engagement, instil hope
4) Dignity/respect: respectful & honest interactions, respect for values/beliefs/culture, challenge discrimination/stigma
5) Partnership/communication: work in partnership, each individual is expert in their life
6) Evaluating recovery, individuals track own progress
What is the difference between clinical and personal recovery?
- Clinical recovery related to symptom management
- Personal recovery based on consumer experience and their overall happiness & wellbeing
What is clinical recovery?
- About reducing symptoms, getting back to social functioning and normality
- Psychopathology, diagnosis, treatment, clinical expertise
What is personal recovery?
- Emerged from expertise of people with mental illness
- Deeply person and unique experience
- Changing and shifting attitudes, values, goals with satisfaction and hope
- Value centred towards choice and empowerment
What is therapist’s role in clinical recovery?
- Clinician is the driver
- Based on clinical improvements/outcomes
- Reduction in symptoms and management of symptoms
What is therapist role in recovery?
- Consumers are driver
- Based on goals, hopes, aspiration
- Social function measured by them
