Lipids Flashcards
What are the 2 types of lipids
Triglycerides and phospholipids
How do you form triglycerides
A condensation reaction happens between one molecule of glycerol and three molecules of fatty acids
What bond is formed between two triglycerides
Ester bond
What is the standard formula for fatty acids
RCOOH
What can the variable group on fatty acids be
Saturated or unsaturated fats
What do carbons have in saturated fats
All carbons have single bonds
What do carbons have in unsaturated fats
Some carbons may form a double C=C bond
What is the structure of a triglyceride
Has 3 fatty acids
Has a glycerol group
Does not have a phosphate group
What is the structure of a phospholipid
Has 2 fatty acids
Has a glycerol group
Has a phosphate group
Where are phospholipids found
In the cell membrane
What are phospholipids made of
Hydrophilic heads
Hydrophobic tails
Why can the hydrophilic heads form bonds with water
They are polar. This means that it has a charged end. The negative end of the phosphate group attaches with the positive end of the water
What are hydrophobic tails
Non polar
Do triglycerides or phospholipids have ester bonds
Both
Do triglycerides or phospholipids have a glycerol group
Both
