What are lipids?

A

> soluble in alcohol rather than water
not polymers
eg. triglycerides, phospholipids and cholesterol

Glycerol

A

> has 3 carbon atoms/3 OH groups/5 H groups

> it is an alcohol ( free OH groups )

Fatty acids

A

> hydrocarbon tail with a carboxyl group at one end
if it is saturated there will be no covalent bonds between carbons
if unsaturated there will be a double bond

Function of triglycerides

A

> energy source - broken down in respiration
- hydrolyse ester bonds, then glycerol and fatty acids

> energy store - can be stored without effecting WP

> insulation
buoyancy - less dense than water
protection - around delicate organs to act as a shock absorber
