Anaerobic Respiration in Eukaryotes Flashcards
what occurs/doesn’t when there is no oxygen?
> oxygen cannot be the final electron or proton acceptor
the conc of protons increases in the matrix/decreasing the gradient
no oxidative phosphorylation
reduced NAD and FAD cannot unload H+ so cannot be re oxidised
krebs cycle and link reaction stop
Ethanol Fermentation
1) pyruvate is decarboxylated to ethanal by pyruvate decarboxylase
2) ethanal accepts hydrogens from reduced NAD and becomes ethanol
3) reduced NAD is re oxidised and made available to accept H+
Lactate fermentation
1) pyruvate accepts hydrogen atoms from the reduced NAD
> pyruvate is reduced to lactate
> reduced NAD becomes oxidised
2)The re oxidised NAD can accept more hydrogen atoms from the triose phosphate
How much is ATP produced fork Ethanol and Lactate fermentation?
0 ATP is produced
