Carbohydrates 2 - polysaccharides Flashcards
what is a polysaccharide?
> polymers of monosaccharides
> 100,000s of monomers
Why are they good energy stores?
> glycogen and starch are compact
glucose can be easily snipped of the end for respiration
less soluble in water meaning WP doesn’t decrease and disrupt the workings of the cell
Amylose ( plants )
> long chain of alpha glucose molecules
has glycosidic bonds 1 and 4
coils into a spiral shape held together by hydrogen bonds
less soluble
Amylopectin ( plants )
> glycosidic bonds but branches between carbons 1 and 6
coils into a spiral shape
branches form from spiral
Glycogen ( animals )
> branches between 1-6
1-4 bonded chains are smaller/less tendency to coil
more compact cus of more branches
easier to remove monomer umits
