lipids - 1 Flashcards
what do lipids all contain
hydrocarbons
2 types of lipids we need to know
phospholipids
triglycerides
what are triglycerides made up of
one molecule of glycerol
three fatty acid tails
are the fatty acid tails hydrophobic or hydrophilic and what does this mean
hydrophobic - make the lipids insoluble in water
2 types of fatty acids
saturated and unsaturated
structure of saturated fatty acids
dont have double bonds between carbon atoms
structure of unsaturated fatty acids
have double bonds between carbon atoms - cause chain to kink
are triglycerides formed by condensation or hydrolysis
condensation
which bond forms between the glycerol and fatty acid in the triglyceride
ester bond
difference between phospholipids and triglycerides
one of the fatty acid tails has been replaced with a phosphate group
in phospholipids, are the tails hydrophobic or hydrophilic
hydrophobic - repel water
whats the test for lipids
emulsion
3 steps for emulsion test
- shake test substance with ethanol for a min, pour solution into water
- any lipid will show up as a milky emulsion
- the more lipids, more noticeable the milky colour
