What is triadic listing?

The linguistic term for vocabulary.

The study of sounds in english.
What is semantic field?
Groups of words that are connected in meaning.
What is an example of semantic field?
classroom, teacher, lesson and homework are all connected to school.
What is an abstract noun?
The name we give to things that don’t exist physically- feelings, ideas, qualities.
What is an example of an abstract noun?
friendship, sadness, democracy.
What is syndetic listing?
Words in a list connected by a conjunction.
What is an example of syndetic listing?
’ Birds flock and wheel and cry’.
What is asyndetic listing?
Words in a list which are not connected by a conjunction.
What is an example of asyndetic listing?
‘I gave her food, shelter, clothing’.
What is prosody?
This refers to features of spoken language such as stress, pace. rhythm and intonation.
What is an intensifier?
A modifier which has little meaning except to intensify the meaning it modifies.
What is an example of an intensifier?
‘honestly’ in ‘I honestly don’t know’
What is a balanced sentence?
Type of rhetorical language where contrasting ideas or words are balanced against each other.
What is an example of a balanced sentence?
‘It’s just too good from Green, and just too bad for the goalkeeper’.
What is a conditional clause?
Used to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take place if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled.
What is an example of a conditional clause?
‘If I find her address, I’ll send her an invitation’
What is anaphora?
In grammatical terms this means that a word, usually a pronoun, refers back to something or someone that has already been mentioned.
What is an example of anaphora?
’ Barry can’t come because he’s ill’
What is antithesis?
Here the writer or speaker has a concern for symmetry- the second half of the sentence contains a similar or opposite idea to the first half. These techniques are very effective in persuasion, and are sometimes known as parallelism or antithesis.
What is an example of antithesis?
‘Ask not what your country can do for you: ask what you can do for your country.
What is emotive lexis?
Language which can be used to affect people’s emotions.
What is alliteration?
When two or more words close to each other begin with the same sound.
What is an example of alliteration?
‘…rifles rapid rattle’.
