lines 741-757 Flashcards
haec effatus equum in medios moriturus et ipse concitat,
Having spoken these [words] he himself, too, ready to drives his horse into the midst [of the enemy]
et Venulo adversum se turbidus infert dereptumque ab equo dextra complectitur hostem et gremium ante suum multa vi concitus aufert.
and violently goes against Venulus and he grasps the enemy with his right hand after he (the enemy) had been torn from his horse and (holding him) in front of his chest he carries him off at full speed with much strength.
tollitur in caelum clamor cunctique Latiniconvertere oculos.
A shout is raised to heaven and all the Latins turn their eyes [towards the scene].
volat igneus aequore Tarchon arma virumque ferens;
Ardent Tarchon flies over the plain bearing arms and the man.
tum summa ipsius ab hasta defringit ferrum et partis rimatur apertas, qua vulnus letale ferat;
Then he breaks off the iron from the end of the spear of that man [Venulus] and searches for the exposed areas where he might inflict the fatal wound.
contra ille repugnans sustinet a iugulo dextram et vim viribus exit.
On the other hand that man (Venulus) fighting back holds the right hand (of Tarchon) (away) from his throat and avoids the violence by means of (his own) strength.
utque volans alte raptum cum fulva draconem fert aquila
And just as when the golden eagle flying high carries off the snake which it had seized
implicuitque pedes atque unguibus haesit
and entangles its feet and holds it fast with its talons
saucius at serpens sinuosa volumina versat arrectisque horret squamis et sibilat ore arduus insurgens
but the wounded snakes twists its winding coils (around the eagle) and bristles with its scales erect and hisses with its mouth, rising aloft
illa haud minus urget obunco luctantem rostro, simul aethera verberat alis:
that [eagle] no less with its hooked beak presses upon the struggling [snake] at the same time it beats the air with its wings:
haud aliter praedam Tiburtum ex agmine Tarchon portat ovans.
in just the same way Tarchon carries in triumph his booty out of the Tibertian battle array.
