Limbic System Flashcards
What are the downstream targets of the limbic system?
- Anterior and Mid Cingulate cortex
- Amygdala
- Hypothalamus
- Periaqueductal gay (PAG)
- Autonomic Nervous systerm
- Dorsal Raphe Nucleus (DRN) and Locus Coeruleus (LC)
What are the functions of the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC)?
. Store emotional / valenced infromation
. Recode the Amygdala
What are the functions of the Mid-Cingulate Cortex (MCC)?
. Select responses (mental or motor)
. Predict outcomes and resolve ambiguity
. Improvise new behaviors for new problems
How does Amygdala work?
. Invests sensory experience with emotional significance
. Most prominently involved in fear.
Function of the Hypothalamus
Autonomic / Hormonal control
How does the Periaqueductal gray (PAG) function?
Coordinate behaviors; autonomic/skeletal
What is the function of the Autonomic Nervous Systerm (ANS)?
Skeletal motor output & memory enhancement
What are the functions of the Locus Coeruleus (LC)?
. Coordinates responses
. Enhances storage of emotional memories
How does the Dorsal Raphe Nucleus (DRN) work?
Regulates mood
What are primary emotions?
They are reflexive emotions (implicit). Linked with autonomic reflexes. Fear is the most well-studied implicit emotion.
Amygdala, hypothalamus, PAG
What are the secondary emotions?
They are conscious emotions. Object and context depended and involve conscious processing.
Cortical limbic structures
Which region of the cingulate gyrus affect emotion?
. Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC)
. Midcingulate cortex (MCC)
Function of ACC
Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is involved in Affect. It stores long-term emotional memories, and it operates through the autonomic nervous system via projections to the nucleus of the solitary tract (NST) and the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMX)
Function of MCC
Midcingulate cortex (MCC) is involved in motivated beharior and response selection, its anterior part is active during fear, and it operates through its spinal projections to the skeletomotor system. It also has extensive projections to the striatum, red nucleus, pontine nuclei (cerebellum), and cranial nerve motor nuclei for somatomotor driving of alpha motor neurons.
How is the LC/NE combined with the limbic motor systems
- NTS/PVT mediate heart rate responses in sACC/Central Amyg
- PAG:NE selects F-F
- PVN drives HPA Axis; NE, ACTH, cortisol
- Enhances Amygdala processing and memory
