What is SWL?
Safe working load is the maximum load that the equipment may raise, lower or suspend under operating conditions.
SWL=Min Breaking Load x Safety Factor
Safety Factors:
* General - 1/6th
* Persons - 1/10th
* LB/FRC - 1/2.2th
What is in the Lifting Register?
Holds records and service history of equipment held onboard including dates, location of inspections and dates the units came into service.
Includes: SWL, Repairs, Modifications, Tests and Examinations
Competant person as per LOLER Code?
Someone who has such appropriate practical and theoretical knowledge and experience of the lifting equipment to be thoroughly examined as will enable them to detect defects or weaknesses and to assess their importance in relation to the safety and continued use of the lifting equipment.
Not a person who conducts regular maintenance of equipment and someone who is independant/impartial to make objective decisions.
What maintenance is carried out on lifting equipment?
Prior to any operation - testing limits, stops and general condition
Annually - Inspection by a competant person
Frequency of gangway/accomodation ladder load testing?
Static proof load test is required for both at intervals of 5 Years.
For passenger vessels: stores platforms, stage lifts, pontoons and its ladders should also be static load tested at intervals of no more than 5 years.
