Q
Describe nutrition
(name definition, nutrition in plants and animals and their characteristics)
A

Nutrition is the absorption of food to provide energy and substances needed for growth, development and repair. They are compounds that may be large and complex or simple.
Nutrition in green plants involves photosynthesis, in which energy from the sunlight is absorbed and used to turn carbon dioxide and water into simple sugars. Plants convert these simple sugars into complex compunds, such as cellulose and protein. Mineral ions from the soil are needed to make proteins.
Animals eat plants or other animals to gain energy and nutrients. Food is digested, absorbed into the blood and assimilated by cells for growth and repair. Food which is not digested and absorbed is egested in faeces.

Q

what is respiration? brief explanation

A

all living organisms respire because they all need energy. Respiration involves chemical reactions that occur in cells to break down nutrients to release energy.
alternative definition: is the release of energy from food that happens in all living organisms

Q

What is movement?

A

causes an organism to change its position or place.

alternative definition: organisms move themselves or part of themselves into new areas to change position.

Q

movement in plants

A

plants move slowly when they grow. their roots move down into the soil and their leaves and stems move up towardss the light. leaves can move to face the sun so they can absorb as much light as possible

Q

brief explanation of what growth is. also growth in animals and plants

A

growth is the permanent increase in size of an organism. plants carry on growing throughout their lives. Animals stop growing once they reach a certain size

13
Q

explain excretion

A

all living organisms produce toxic waste substances as a result of metabolism. excretion is the removal of these waste materials and substances in excess of requirements from the body.

14
Q

excretion in plants

A

plants store waste substances in their leaves, so the waste materials are removed when the leaves fall off.

16
Q

state the difference between excretion and egestion

A

excretion is the removal of metabolic waste. egestion is food which has passed through the gut without being digested.

17
Q

what is stimuli?

A

a change in the invironment that is detected by a sense organ.
alternative: the change in the internal and external environment that living organisms are able to detect or sense.

18
Q

what is sensitivity?

A

is being able to detect and respond to stimuli.

19
Q

how is sensitivity in plants?

A

plants respond to movement of the sun by moving their leaves to face the light. the flowers of some plants open in the morning and close at night

20
Q

how is sensitivity in animals?

A

animals have sensory cells and sense organs for detecting light, sound, touch, pressure and chemicals in the air and food

21
Q

describe reproduction

A

reproduction results in the formation of new individuals.

22
Q

asexual reproduction

A

involves one parent giving rise to offspring that are often identical to each other and to the parent

23
Q

sexual reproduction

A

involves two parent organisms producing gametes (sex cells) which fuse to give rise to the next generation, the offspring show variation and are not identical to their parents.

24
Q

state the difference between breathing and respiration

A

breathing is the action of inhaling and exhaling and respiration is a process that releases energy in all living things

25
Q

name three different activities for which we need food

A

growth, movement and thinking

26
Q

what is the difference between something dead and a non-living object?

A

something dead had an organism and moved. While a non-living object doesn’t move, reproduct or live. Also it doesn’t have an organism.

27
Q

give two examples of each life processes

A

movement: a girl dancing, a boy playing football
respiration: a boy running, a girl doing exercise
sensitivity: a girl watching the news, a woman driving
growth: puberty, a boy on his birthday
reproduction: a pregnant woman, a dolphin having her baby
excretion: a dog urinating, the leaf of a tree falling
nutrition: a girl eating fruit, a boy drinking orange juice

28
Q

Say the difference between respiration and breathing

A

Respiration is the release of energy from food that happens in all the living cells in the body. Breathing happens in árganos, such as gills or lungs
