Life processes Flashcards
What are the seven life proceses?
Mrs Gren: Movement Reproduction Sensitivity Growth Respiration Excretion Nutrition
What is biology?
It is the study of all living things and living organisms.
Classified in 5 kingdoms (name them)
Describe nutrition (name definition, nutrition in plants and animals and their characteristics)
Nutrition is the absorption of food to provide energy and substances needed for growth, development and repair. They are compounds that may be large and complex or simple.
Nutrition in green plants involves photosynthesis, in which energy from the sunlight is absorbed and used to turn carbon dioxide and water into simple sugars. Plants convert these simple sugars into complex compunds, such as cellulose and protein. Mineral ions from the soil are needed to make proteins.
Animals eat plants or other animals to gain energy and nutrients. Food is digested, absorbed into the blood and assimilated by cells for growth and repair. Food which is not digested and absorbed is egested in faeces.
what is ingestion?
the process of taking in food
what is respiration? brief explanation
all living organisms respire because they all need energy. Respiration involves chemical reactions that occur in cells to break down nutrients to release energy.
alternative definition: is the release of energy from food that happens in all living organisms
word equation for respiration involving oxygen
glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water + energy released
What is movement?
causes an organism to change its position or place.
alternative definition: organisms move themselves or part of themselves into new areas to change position.
movement in plants
plants move slowly when they grow. their roots move down into the soil and their leaves and stems move up towardss the light. leaves can move to face the sun so they can absorb as much light as possible
movement in animals
they move to obtain food or to avoid being caught by predators.
what does growth involve?
it always involves making more complex chemicals which is why the dry mass increases
brief explanation of what growth is. also growth in animals and plants
growth is the permanent increase in size of an organism. plants carry on growing throughout their lives. Animals stop growing once they reach a certain size
what is metabolism?
metabolism is all the chemical reactions that occur in an organism. respiration is a major part of metabolism
explain excretion
all living organisms produce toxic waste substances as a result of metabolism. excretion is the removal of these waste materials and substances in excess of requirements from the body.
excretion in plants
plants store waste substances in their leaves, so the waste materials are removed when the leaves fall off.
excretion in animals
animals breathe out carbon dioxide. other waste substances leave the body in the urine.
