Life Processes-1 Flashcards
What criteria do we use to decide whether somethingn is alive
one way to check whether something is alive is to see if the body is making any type of movements such as walking, breathing, running etc. if the body is not making any type of visible movements, we must cehck if its carrying out life processes. Living things are made up of cells and cells carry out various processes for living such respration, nutrition, reproduction etc. This is the most important criterion to check if something is alive or not.
Why are molecular movements needed for life?
All living things are made up of an hierarchial organisation. They have organ systems made up of organs which are made up of tissues which are made up of cells. This complex hierarchy is always likely to keep breaking down due to environmental effects around us. So it is important to keep repairing it and maintaining it so that we can live. For this repairing to happen, cells must reproduce and for that to take place molecules must move around all the time.
define life processes
the processes which together perform the job of maintaining life and survival of an organism are called life processes.
define nutrition
Nutrition is the process of taking in food and converting it into energy and other vital nutrients required for life.
define oxidation
addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen from/to a chemical reaction is called oxidation.
define reduction
addition of hydrogen or removal of oxygen from/to a chemical reaction is called reduction.
define respiration
respiration is the process of breaking down of glucose, with the help of oxygen, to release energy in the form ATP molecules.
define enzyme
enzymes are certain bio catalysts found that help speed up the chemical reactions happening in our body.
define digestion
digestion is the breaking down of complex substances into simple, absorbable form.
define transportation
movement of a particle from one place to another
define excretion
excretion is the removal of harmful metabolic waste from our body.
Why is diffusion insufficient to meet the oxygen requirements of multicellular organisms like humans?
In multi-cellular organisms, all the cells may not be in direct contact with the surrounding environment.
-in large organisms, the orxyegn in the air has to travel large distances to reach each and ever cell of the body.
-diffusion is a slow process so it will take a very long time for oxygen to be available for every cell in the body
- As the volume of multicellular organisms like humans are so big, it is very difficult for air to reach all the internal cells quickly through diffusion. So there are respiratory pigments present in the blood which take up the oxygen from the lungs and carry it to all the parts of the body.
What processes would you consider essential for maintaining life?
the processes that are necessary for maintaining life are
-nutrition
-respiration
-transportation
-excretion
-control and coordination
-movement
-reproduction
-growth
What are outside raw materials used for by an organism?
Food as source of energy.
Oxygen for breakdown of food to obtain energy
Water for proper digestion of food and other functions inside the body.
