How do Organisms Reproduce- Males Flashcards
what are the parts of male reproductive system
-testes
-epididymis
-vas deferns
-penis
-urethra
-glands:
-seminal vesicles
-bulbourethral gland/cowper’s gland
-prostate gland
what is testes and function
A pair of testes are located inside scrotum which is present outside the abdominal cavity.
It is responsible for the production of the male gamete- sperm ( produced in the seminferous tubules.)
It is also responsible for the production of the hormone- testosterone. This hormone is regulates the formation of sperms and stimulates the development of secondary sexual charcateristics( give ex) in boys.
what is the epididymis
It is a duct like organ which connects the testes to the vas deferens. It stores the sperms produced and allows it to mature.
what is the urethra
It is a long tube like structure from urinary bladder which extends into the penis. It provides a passage for passing of sperm and urine.
what is the penis
It is a muscular organ present outside the abdominal cavity. It helps for the transfer of sperms from the male body into the female’s vagina.
what is the vas deferens
It is a long tube like structure which connects the testis to the urethra. It transports the sperm from the testis into the urethra.
what are the 3 glands present in the male reproductive system
the three glands are:
seminal vesicle
prostate gland
bulbourethral gland/ cowper’s gland
what is the function of 3 glands? what does it produce? how does it help?
these glands produce alkaline seminal fluids. These fluids along with the sperm constitute, the white and milky, semen. The semen nourishes the sperm and allows for it to stay alive till it reaches the vagina. It also makes its transport into vagina more easier.
what is the sperm
The sperms are tiny
bodies that consist of mainly genetic
material and a long tail that helps them to
move towards the female germ-cell.
why are testis present in the scrotal sacs present outside the abdominal cavity
this is to ensure the testis is kept at optimum 35 degrees celsius whcih is 2-3 degrees lower than normal ody temperature. This temperatureis needed for the meiotic divison to happen. The sperms require a lower temperature for their development and maturation.
how does scrotum skin help in the mainting temp
The skin of the scrotum expands during summer to keep the testes cool. Anad in winters, the skin of scrotum contracts to keep testis close to the body and generate heat.
how are testosterone and sperms produced inside testis?
Leydig cells in the testis prduce the male sex hormone which is testosterone while the seminiferous tubules help in the production of sperms.
