Life MRS GREN Flashcards
M stands for
Movement,
of part or all of your body. Every known living organism can move. some organisms like plants maybe mostly can’t move but they will usually have the ability for self powered movement. movement is important as it improves the chances of catching food or avoiding capture for both predator and prey.
R stands for
Respiration,
A process used by all living things to convert (change) energy from carbohydrates and fats into energy that can be used by cells.
Respiration is the breakdown of sugars with the use of oxygen. this produces Carbon dioxide as a by product (by product meaning = a secondary product made in the manufacture of something else).
Some microorganisms, where there is very little oxygen use other molecules like nitrates and iron to help breakdown sugars.
S stands for
Sensitivity,
sense/detect surroundings and respond to them.
G stands for
Growth,
increase of size, this might be, height, width, or mass.
Respiration provides excess energy for organisms to use to grow.
R stands for
Reproduction,
making new individuals.
Simplest form of reproduction is dividing 1 cell into 2 cells.
can occur sexually or asexually (meaning an organism can produce a new organism entirely by themselves)
Sexual production the genetic material from each parent is split in half and combined with the genetic material of the second parent. this creates a unique individual with a mix of genes from both parents.
E stands for
Excretion,
the removal/ getting rid of waste products from an organism. for example urine (wee) and dead cells.
All organisms produce waste which needs to be removed. If waste stays in they can become toxic.
All organisms have methods to remove waste.
N stands for
Nutrition.
organisms to survive need food for energy and nutrients.
Essential for growth, survival, reproduction.
