Q

Child bed fever affected many women who gave birth in unhygienic hospitals in the 19th Century. Doctor Ignaz Semmelweis introduced what?

A

hand washing using a disinfectant chlorinated lime solution. This washes off the Pathogen’s. Hand washing gets rid of virus’, bacteria, pathogen’s.

Q

What does Aseptic technique mean?

A

Using practices and procedures to prevent/stop contamination from pathogen’s. A doctor would use aseptic technique in a surgery room, so there is no contamination.

Q

Why do you grow bacteria on agar jelly.

A

It is a growth surface for the bacteria. bacteria is so tiny they can’t be seen by the eye. On agar it serves as food for the bacteria and the bacteria becomes a colony of thousands of bacteria so can be seen under a microscope.

Q

Bacteria what are they?

what are they measured in?

A

Bacteria are usually bigger than viruses. They are small so measured in micrometres. um
um = micrometer = 10000um
10000 micrometer = 1cm
10 micrometers =the size of a fog, mist or water droplet, tiny!
If there is just one it is called bacterium.
Bacteria have many different shapes.
Some have tails called Flagella that let them move.
Bacteria release toxins which make us feel ill.

Q

Diseases caused by bacteria are?

How can they be treated?

A

Tuberculosis, TB damages the lungs
Salmonella causes food poisoning

Bacterial pathogen’s can be treated using antibiotics which you can get from your doctor.

Q

In a experiment with bacteria why would you use a Bunsen burner?

A

To keep microorganisms away from yourself. the heat makes the air move up from the plate as the air currents are drawn upwards. they then move away from you.

Q

What are viruses ?

A

Viruses are the smallest type of microorganism. A virus can only reproduce in a cell and can not live on their own as they are not living organisms.

Q

Why do Viruses make us feel ill?

A

They make us feel ill as they destroy our cells. They are hard to treat as antibiotics will not work against them.

Q

What are the differences between bacteria and virus?

A

Bacteria are single cells that can multiply and cause infection. they have a cell wall a virus doesn’t.

viruses are much smaller than bacteria and need a host cell ( meaning a cell to live in, a cell which looks after the virus) to be able to reproduce. they enter the living cell and take over the cell’s processes.

viruses can only infect living cells.

bacteria can infect non living things like soil or water.

viruses are not living organisms and can only grow when in contact with living cells.
viruses do not have a cell wall so their genetic material is enveloped/ covered by a protein coat.
viruses are 10 to 100 times smaller than the smallest bacteria. bacteria can be a giant next to a virus.
